Federal Grants for Teachers

In the educational system, students are not the only ones who can get federal grants. In fact, teachers can do the same thanks to the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007.

The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 entitles qualified candidates to get a federal grant of up to $4,000 a year and have the intention of teaching public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.

You must teach for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which you received a TEACH Grant. In the event that you fail to honor your commitment, you are required to repay this loan to the U.S. Department of Education. You will also have to pay interest from the date that the grant was disbursed.

If you are really interested, you are advised to contact the financial aid office at the college where you will be enrolling.

To apply for the federal grant for teachers, you must first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

You must be U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.

Be currently involved as an undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or graduate student in a postsecondary educational institution that has chosen to participate in the TEACH Grant Program and in a course that is necessary to begin a career in teaching.

Once in the program, you have to maintain a GPA of at least 3.25 during your academic years.

Lastly, you have to sign an agreement which basically says that you have to repay the money that was given if you fail to teach for the assigned period. This document you sign known as a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve is renewed annually.

Your chances of being given by federal grant are much higher when you will teach subjects such as Bilingual Education and English Language Acquisition, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Reading, Science and Special Education.

If the field of expertise you want to pursue is not mentioned, you can check with the Department of Education in your area or in other states where there are shortages.

To know more about what it takes to be a teacher in a low income school, you can check what is written on section 9101(23) of the Elementary and the Secondary Education Act of 1965 or in section 602(10) of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act.

The truth is that the educational system in this country has gone lower and lower and one way to improve that is to get qualified teachers who have the commitment and determination to make that change.

A lot can happen in the next four years and after doing your time, you can move on to teach in other schools or choose to stay and leave a mark for those who have to study in low income schools.

By applying for a federal grant, it is only right that you give back what was taught to you so everything you have learned will be put to good use and you can see that in the eyes of the students.

Just remember that if you fail to complete the required teaching service as explained above, you will have this back to the government as a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan with interest charged from the date of each TEACH Grant disbursement.

Federal Grant Program for Education

The cost of education is quite expensive which is why some are discouraged from getting a degree. But before you give, see if you can get a scholarship, a loan or even a federal grant.

A federal grant for education like the Federal Pell Grant Program allows people who don’t have enough money an opportunity to post secondary education. If you get it, you can use it in one of the 5,400 colleges across the country.

The amount that will be given from the grant depends on the student’s expected family contribution (EFC), the cost of attendance as determined by the institution, the student's enrollment status whether this is full-time or part-time and if the student is able to attend for a full academic year or less. When you apply for a Federal Pell Grant, you cannot use it in more than one school at a time.

A formula is used to compute the EFC which the Department of Education follows and is established by Congress.  The fundamental elements in the formula are the student’s income, the parent’s income and assets and the number family members.

To get the EFC, you add a percentage of net income and a percentage of net assets. It is only after the computation has been made that the committee will decide whether the student is eligible for the Federal Pell Grant.

In order to qualify for the program, you must be an enrolled in a participating school either on an undergraduate degree or a vocational course.

The money may be credited to the student’s school account or paid directly in the form of cash or check. Students must be paid at least one per term. If the school does not comply with this, they have to give it at least twice per academic year.

Is there enough money for the program? The answer is yes. Just last year, there was over $16 billion available which is a little over $2 billion than the previous year. Close to 6 million students were awarded with the program with an average of $2,945 being given to each student. This number is expected to increase by the end of this year.

Students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant may also avail of two other federal grants namely the Academic Competitiveness Grant or ACG and the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant.

To qualify for the ACG, you must be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, enrolled at least half-time in a degree program; either a freshman or a sophomore in the academic year or enrolled in a certificate program for at least a year. You must also have a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The maximum amount you can get for your first year is $750 while $1,300 for the second academic year.

As for the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant, this is only for students who are on their third, fourth or fifth year. You can get a maximum of $4,000 per year, be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen and enrolled at least half time pursuing a degree in the sciences. To stay in the program, you must maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

There are federal grant programs for students. You just have to see if you qualify and then take it from there.

Federal Grant Categories

To date, more than 1,000 federal grant programs are offered by the 26 federal agencies. These consist of 21 different categories and you should read on to find out more.

Anything that has to do with crops,  livestock and the land belongs under Agriculture.

If it has something to do with preserving the nation’s history, this falls under the category of Arts and the Humanities, Recovery Act or Regional Development

Any ideas that will help improve the economy are the category Business and Commerce. This is not only for the US but also with nations that the country has economic ties with to improve the situation over there.

To fight against alcohol, abuse, drugs and other vices, such proposals fall under the grant category of Community Development.

Every year, the country faces natural disasters. While there are federal agencies around that help in the effort, any ideas that have never been done before are most welcome as there is also a category that focus on Disaster Prevention and Relief.

There are some who say that there is something wrong with educational system in this country. If you want to help resolve this issue, you can submit a proposal under the category Education.

A lot of people have lost jobs this past year and that number is expected to grow. If you have a proposal that can help the unemployed find work, a proposal can be sent under the category Employment, Labor and Training or Social Services and Income Security

Renewable energy is the answer to save the environment and decrease the country’s dependency on foreign oil. This will also help reduce the emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere that also contribute to climate change. If you have ideas, you can write a proposal on Energy, Environmental Quality or Natural Resources.

Part of reducing the dependency on oil is the promotion of hybrid cars. While American made vehicles are not there yet compared to the Japanese, progress is being made. If you can develop a car that is going in that direction and need funding, write a proposal under the category Transportation. Technological advances in other fields should be addressed to Science and Technology.

We try to follow a certain diet so we get the right amount of nutrients daily. While eating is not enough, this should also be combined with exercise. Such a proposal takes a lot of research and this can be done if you are able to write a proposal under the category Food and Nutrition or health.

If people don’t have jobs, they will eventually lose their homes especially when they are still paying for it. If you have ideas that could help people keep their homes, a proposal should be sent under the category Housing.

Figures are what people look at to make a point. Since getting a census is not always effective, if you have a better way to do it, a proposal will be serve under the category Information and Statistics.

While the government is in charge of making federal and state laws, it is still the people who should be heard. If there are problems and you have a way to address it, a proposal should be sent under the category Law, Justice and Legal Services.

The amount of money you get from the Federal Grant varies. You should send your application together with the supporting documents that mention how much you need so this can be properly evaluated.

Federal Grants For Minorities

It is the government’s responsibility to provide the needs of its people regardless of its gender, ethnicity of religion.  But in the present, minorities are always in a position where they would encounter difficulties in the field they are in.  Freedom, however, does not erase prejudice and discrimination, it is imbibed in the culture which would take a long time to be changed.  Federal grants for minorities ensure that the minority would experience equal rights and opportunities.

Minority federal grants can be divided or categorized into two groups:

• Ethnic minority grants -  are grants designed to offer financial assistance based on ethnic challenges.  Such as grants offered to African American or Latino/Hispanic students.

• Non – ethnic minority grants – are grants provided to individuals who have physical or mental barriers that placed them on disadvantaged position.  These are grants offered to students who have physical disabilities, mental and learning challenges like autism, and even women education grants.

Educational grants provided to minorities are somehow similar to scholarships.  The difference is that scholarships are based on the financial need and merit of the students, while educational minority grants are based on financial need by the marginalized students or ethnic minority students.

Actually educational grants for the minorities would also be the same as the popular federal grants like the Pell Federal grant.  Although, these grants are open not just for minority students, most of the grant recipients are from those sectors.

If you are a minority who have hopes of starting your small business or maybe expand your business, there are also grants set aside for this purpose. The Small Business Association offers the financial assistance to small businesses. You can contact them directly to get informed about any application process or visit their website in SBA.com for latest information about financial aid.

Here are other federal grants for minorities that can be checked out:

• Bilingual / Bicultural Service Demonstration Grants – its objective is to help minorities who working with Limited-English- Proficient. This is a project based grant that aims to improve and linguistic competence of professional minorities.

• Community Programs to Improve Minority Health Program – this program is directed towards minority communities and supporting, developing, and conducting health care in the area.  It would include educational awareness seminars, testing and even access to treatment.

• Cooperative Agreements to Improve Health Status of Minority Populations – this program is geared towards expanding health knowledge of the minority to prevent untimely death and heal conditions.

• Family and Community Violence Programs – this is geared towards the prevention of violent occurrences in campuses and the community.

• Project Grants for Facilities to Improve the Health Status of Minority Populations – this intends to build or improve existing facilities addressing health and population of the minority.

• State and Territorial and technical Assistance Capacity Development Minority HIV/AIDS Demonstration Program – this is to promote better understanding of the disease in minority communities.

When applying for a minority grant there would be necessary documents that are needed to be prepared.  Information about the proof oh=f household income, that you are indeed a minority, information about any past grants, how much money is needed and who would benefit from the funding.

Although applying for federal grants can be exhausting, and at times disappointing, it is important not to give up! Federal grants exist for the simple reason to help the marginalized and those in need.

And if we need it, then we have the right to apply for one.

Federal Grants Assisting Women

Federal grants have always been available for non-profit organizations and institutions to help the public improve the services the receive.  Federal grants have also helped those who are in brink of a business disaster, low-income families and students, and especially the marginalized sector.  Women has been and continuing to be victims of abuse and patriarchal relationships.

Women has long been affected by discrimination based on their gender, although much has been changes in the society, women still experience difficulty especially when venturing into the business world a=or a man-dominated field.  The purpose of federal grants helping out women is to make sure that women would be able to get started in their life.

There are small business grants that can be given to women who wants to start their own business.  You just have to comply with the necessary requirements.  There are few grants that may have limiting requirements making the grants only available to some, there would grants that require the applicant not to be younger than 65 years old and others would require the applicant may be handicapped in some way.

The government can offer federal financial aid for minority women who would like to start their own business and grants that could cover the equipment, rent, and the overhead expenses.  Single mothers can also get special assistance and can be used to start anew.  Government grants could also include physical and mental health care and  retirement assistance.

If you are interested in acquiring or applying for this grant, then you can start asking those who have already been awarded with grants.  It is best to know how they were able to get the grant first-hand.  First hand information would be a credible way of knowing the grants available and ready to help women.

Another way of knowing about the federal grants for women is by checking the internet and performing a simple online search.  There would be websites where you can get information free about grants being offered to women.  They would include information on how they will help you apply for a grant and what are the requirements.

There are over 5,000 federal grants for women. In every year, statistics showed that tow out every three business is started  by a woman.  Women have 75 percent successful in business ownership compared to men.

In a research compiled by the Center For Women’s Business Research and Entrepreneur magazine, women are said to be the most progressive species. They have a higher possibility of finishing their education, starting and their own business and even found or launch a non-profit institution or organization.  This is on the side or while being a mother and raising the children

Another good thing about the grant is that women also benefit from indirectly.  Recently women organizations and institutions have landed a grant and used it to educate women about violence against women  (VAW) and also used by the center to help women victims of abuse. Women can also get a federal grant by pursuing something that they totally love, just like writing or pursue their studies.

Women are getting federal grants because this serve as an investment on women creativity, intelligence and determination as they have shown in different fields they have performed well.  This show of confidence, as demonstrated by the government, towards the women are somehow perceived to be something that can make relative changes on the American culture and how women are perceived.

These federal grants could somehow empower women and brake down the barriers that discriminate and narrow the opportunities for women.  Which is why every year, more and more women are showing interest on the grant programs.  After all this could be what women are waiting for to turn their lives around.

Federal Grants And Other Economic Aids

Federal grants are money or financial assistance awarded and authorized by the United State government to different non-profit organizations.  Its intention is to expand, improve the quality and strengthen the public service being rendered by these organizations, agencies and local government units.

What’s clear about federal grants is that it is not used to acquire or pay for property and service.  Unlike loans, grant recipients would not be paying back the grant but they are required to submit complete audits of the grant money and return the unspent amount to the agency that rewarded the grant.

Federal grants are economic aids that the United States government provide to its institutions, agencies, organizations and people.  But aside from grants there are also other economic aids that the government offer to its citizens.

The Catalogue of Federal Domestic Assistance or CFDA has the listings of differed benefit programs that can help those in need.  Benefits assistance and programs listed in CFDA caters to state and local governments, federally- recognized Indian tribal governments, private profit and non-profit organizations and institutions, specialized groups and also for individuals.

Here re some types of federal benefit programs that the government offer to individuals and organizations in need:

• Loans – these are financial assistance where money is lent to the person who is need for a specific period of time and how much would be paid back.  It may or may not incur interest.

• Insurances – these are financial assistance that can reimburse losses that was sustained in different reasons like accidents.

• Use of Property, Facilities and Equipment – federal facilities or property can be used on a loan.  But it is clear the property or the facility does not remain as property of the recipient of the assistance.

• Advisory Services and Counseling -  with this federal assistance, you get to have a federal specialist that you can consult with, seek advise from, or invited to counsel individuals, groups or communities.

• Dissemination of Technical Information – these federal programs provides assistance with the publication and information dissemination about certain issues.  This is commonly provided or used through libraries.

• Training – this is a common financial and economic assistance.  Employees or individuals who are not employed by the Federal agency are given instructional or educational activities and seminars.

Students also receive different kinds of financial assistance. College could really be very expensive and financially difficult to deal with especially if the student comes from a low-income earning family.  Federal grants are given to students and you do not have to pay them back.  The student just need to qualify or meet the standards of the federak agency granting the aid.  College students are also offered with the following kinds of assistance from the government:

• Loans – there are different ways on how students can apply for loans, it can be government or private loans. Government loans offered through the school’s counselling office can be enough to cover tuition, housing and other expenses.   The loans that you would have will be determined by the income bracket the student is in.  Compared with private loans, like the one from the bank, government loans are more reasonable with their terms and rates.

• Scholarships – like grants, you do not have to pay them back.  But financial need is not the only basis of getting the aid, academic and scholarly merit are also bases of getting the assistance.  Almost all school offer scholarship, students just need to coordinate with the school counselling or assistance office to inquire about scholarships offered.

With the economic crisis still continuing to create havoc in people’s lives, more and more Americans tend to sacrifice education, health, house renovations and other needs just to get by.  But these federal grants and assistance programs are there to provide assistance and we should take advantage of it.

Federal Grants And Its Role In Health Care

According to USAspending.gov, a website that promotes transparency, stated that in 2008, the United States government spent $106.464 billion dollars for federal grants. Last 2014, the government spent $15.5 billion, and from this amount education has the largest share of 23.4 percent, while health share followed suit with 22.3 percent.

Everybody seems to award health grants, the federal government, state and  even city governments award health grants.  Aside from federal grants, there are also big private foundations and organizations that award health grants and health care aids.

Unfortunately, weakened by the economic crisis, more Americans are unable to hold on to their health insurances and continue with private health care.  There are more people turning to health centers for care. Health care grants can be provided to health centers to provide care and services to those who are continually suffering due to economic crisis.

Aside from health centers, health grants also enable some hospitals and medical professionals to:
• Expand people’s knowledge on certain diseases and its prevention, like HIV/AIDS or diabetes.
• Provide screening and tests to those who cannot afford to obtain necessary medical tests.
• Provide health care to marginalized and minorities.
• Provide health care education and services to culturally diverse populations.
• Build or improve health care facilities.
• Provide assistance health care staff and organizations.

Federal grants also provide support to health education. There are health education projects throughout the United States with the objectives of teaching students about good health and healthy lifestyle. Not only will these project equip the students with the knowledge, but also aims to teach and train school administrators, teachers, and school staff about health, fitness, disease and drug and alcohol abuse prevention.

Health education grants are not only course and seminar oriented, there are also grant programs which focuses on the financial need of the students.  Here are some of the health grants that provides assistance to health course students.

• Advanced Education Nursing Traineeships – this grant is geared towards providing financial assistance to registered nurses who are undergoing advanced training or education programs.

• Health Administration Traineeships and Special Projects Program – this grant is to support students in graduate health programs like health administration or hospital administration.  This programs helps the students to be prepared for employment with public or non-profit institutions.

Health grants would also include funding research and training programs.  Here are two health grants that focuses on research and health improvement:

• National Research Service Awards- health Services Research Training – this is a project which focuses mainly on health services research.  This grant is actually awarded to provide opportunities for those who are taking predoctoral and postdoctoral training.   The objective of this grant is to provide trainees with the ability to understand research methods and analyze/evaluate health care services and provide means to improve it.

• Research on Healthcare Costs, Quality and Outcomes – this is also a project grant which concentrates on research, information dissemination and actual delivery based on the research.  This aims to evaluate the effectives, quality, cost-effectiveness, health care technology used, health statistics and medical liability.  Research is directed towards low-income groups and minority groups with the intention of better providing health care services for these groups.

There are many federal health grants that could be taken advantage of, the important thing is that people can take advantage of health care that they need or at least be knowledgeable about taking care of one’s health.
